Please join us for a presentation from Prof. Volker M. Welter, Dept. of the History of Art & Architecture, UC Santa Barbara and Dr. Natalie Sanderson, Executive Director and Head of Curation at Casa del Herrero, celebrating the exhibition Defined by Design: Houses by Lutah Maria Riggs. The exhibition was curated by students as part of the undergraduate research seminar “Lutah Maria Riggs, Casa del Herrero, and beyond”.

 Undergraduate students from the Department of History of Art and Architecture at UC Santa Barbara selected the exhibits by focusing on design characteristics and architectural details that establish similarities and differences between Casa del Herrero and later designs by Riggs and Riggs & Shaw, respectively.  Regardless of the location, size, and scope of the individual projects, all designs aim to represent the individual clients in architecture and decorative details.  They all respond as well to the demands and opportunities the conditions of each site impose.  Riggs’ early work on the design of the Casa del Herrero turns out to be foundational for her subsequent career as one of Santa Barbara’s foremost domestic architects of the twentieth century.
