Ember + Forge | Blacksmith Exhibition

  • Casa del Herrero 1387 East Valley Road Montecito, CA, 93108 United States (map)

Casa del Herrero’s “House of the Blacksmith” founder, George Fox Steedman, passed away in 1940 and his iconic blacksmith workshop became a time capsule ever since. This spring, the House of the Blacksmith will forge again.

APRIL 6, 2024 | 1:00-4:00 PM (SATURDAY)

Casa del Herrero is proud to partner with Santa Barbara Forge for a one-of-a-kind blacksmith event on Saturday, April 6, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

This event will include an open bar and a rustic farm-to-table style BBQ, cooked on George Steedman's very own hand-forged grill.

Only 75 tickets are being sold for this exclusive event.

Upon arrival, guests can take a walk through George Fox Steedman's historic blacksmith workshop and get a behind-the-scenes look into the 100-year-old space. This is a rare opportunity to get a more in-depth explanation of Steedman's tools, craftsmanship style, and vision when he designed and created his metalwork projects.

While tours of the workshop continue throughout the afternoon, live blacksmith demonstrations will take place outside in the courtyard. Blacksmiths from Santa Barbara Forge will recreate iconic Steedman pieces and embellishments found throughout the estate, with finished items being sold in a silent auction at the end of the event. All proceeds from the auction will benefit Casa del Herrero.

During the workshop tour and blacksmithing demonstration, you will have the chance to ask metalworkers and museum docents any questions you may have.

We will also have a small exhibition featuring photos, original Steedman metalwork journal drawings, rarely-seen family heirlooms, and museum artifacts on display. The Steedman Silver Book (authored by Robert Sweeney with photography by Matt Walla and a foreword by the late George Steedman Bass) will also be available for purchase inside the Casa's new visitor shop.

Abbreviated tours of the main house will also be available, as always.
