Summer Art Program Exhibition

George Fox and Carrie Steedman were creative individuals, the expression of which can be found throughout Casa del Herrero. George was an artisan silversmith, creating many lovely works in silver and Carrie was an accomplished flower arranger, often receiving awards for her arrangements. Together, they built a home that remains a testament to their ingenuity and creative sensibility.

Wanting to inspire creativity in the next generation of Santa Barbara’s youth, the Casa successfully launched its first-ever summer arts program in July 2021. Participants from Girls Inc. of Carpinteria; AHA! Santa Barbara; and Youth and Family Services St. George Youth Center Isla Vista came to the Casa one day a week for four weeks where they interacted with a different artist each week in the creation of art.

Participants worked in a variety of mediums in the creation of 2D and 3D artwork including watercolor, acrylic paint, and assemblage. Additionally, the youth (ranging in age from fifth grade through high school) received a tour of the estate, which further inspired creativity and connection to local history.

A selection of artwork created during the summer program can be viewed below.
